Last Saturday, I got involved in a Hands On New York Day at Astoria Park, Queens. This is a day where people can volunteer in tasks that makes the city's public parks cleaner, greener and ready for the Summer. The day is one of many programmes that New York Cares, the city's largest volunteer organization, shares with partnering organizations to help make the city a better place to live.
Astoria Park is a sixty five acre site situated on the west shore of Queens with panoramic views of midtown Manhattan. It's a park maintained by three employees all year round and was in desperate need of some loving care. Joined by roughly sixty other volunteers, I got started on numerous clean up activities. The railing running along side the park got a fresh coat of paint, as did the park benches and children's play area. Seventy five bags of leaves were collected from the ground and litter was picked up throughout the park and down by the shoreline.
This was my first foray into volunteering work. There was a real feeling of accomplishment at the end of the day and it's also a great way to meet fellow like-minded people. If you live in the New York City and interested in giving back, you can check out the the New York Cares website for upcoming programmes.
